Big Brother's New Look

Check out Penguin's newly commissioned George Orwell book covers designed by David Pearson. The five-book set includes an innovative take on Orwell's most revered novel – Nineteen Eighty-Four – for which he has obscured the author's name and title with black foiling, rendering them almost illegible.

The Great Orwell series is out today, penguin.co.uk. More of Pearson's work is at typeasimage.com.

GIF THIS

Here at From London With Style we're loving that animated GIFs are being used for editorial. Like this one by designer duo Reed + Rader who recently produced GIF-based fashion shoots for both V Magazine and online store SSENSE.Weird and weirder.

Passing Notes

Where would all the designers and writers be without their trusty black Moleskine notebook? Well, fellow 'creatives' maybe it's time we all branched out and let a little colour pop in...

CELEBRITY BURGERAMA

Just when you thought London didn’t have room for another pop-up-burger-van-turned-restaurant craze, Lucky Chip get in on the ‘oh so 2012’ act. Move over Meat Liquor out the way Dirty Burger – there’s a new beef patty in town.

By day you’ll find Lucky Chip dolling out their wrist-drippingly juicy burgers to round-the-block queues at Netil Market (where you can also get your fixie bike fixed, a cheerful hit of metal jewellery, screen print t-shirts and other such crafty wares). By night they have set up residency in the kitchens at the Sebright Arms in Bethnal Green.

Juicy, delicious, good quality beef and best of all, each one is named after a different film star. Go for a simple Kevin Bacon (cheese and bacon – obv!) or be more daring with the Tom Selleck (cheese, bacon, roasted pineapple and a crispy onion ring – no moustache though). Or even the Daryl Hannah (a fillet o'fish burger).

Sides? Well you’re already going to have a heart attack here so you might as well dive right in and gorge yourself on the cheesy fries, chilli fries, or just plain delicious skin-on fries served with lashings of hot, hot, hot wasabi mayo.

All of this glorious junk is served on paper plates – I think it’s currently riffing as post ironic irony or something equally nonchalant and nonsensical. Yep, the art of making high-end stuff look grimy is the hot ticket to success out East. Smart/Casual in reverse.
Yes it’s all a bit hip, but the food is thumb’s-up tasty, so go on, get your hungry self down to Lucky Chip Burger at the Sebright Arms, open nightly from 7pm. Caution: we arrived at 7.15pm and the tables were all but one gone.

So Frenchie, So Chic

And tasty too. This award-winning restaurant is the white hot ticket in gay Paree -
Franco-Italian cuisine meets Brooklyn-style interiors - n'est pas? And if you can't get one of just 20 tables at Frenchie, you can drown your sorrows in their wine bar over la rue - Frenchie Bar à Vins.

From the Jamie Oliveoil school of cooking and after an 18-month stint at New York's Gramercy Tavern, head chef and owner Gregory Marchand offers one of the best value 3-course menus in town from a teeny weeny kitchen. Oh la la! Enough francophile phrases to make you hungry yet? Allez-y!

Watch Marchand's vid now.

Karl, I think you're the cat's whiskers...

So Karl's new collection is at N-A-P, and yes it's lovely - lace clip-on collars, utilitarian pockets and natty prints. And yes, it's got a quirky title - Karlouflage. And yes, I still want the PVC sweatshirt from the last launch (jeeez!). But to be honest you can find all that out for yourself. I don't wanna talk about Karl (shock I know, I love him dearly) but it's King Karl's fluffball Choupette who's really stealing the show. MIAOW!

Roll Choupette cam...

Are you Afraid of the Dark?

Hold on a minute fast-track fashion! While AW12 is everywhere, here at FromLondonWithStyle we're still waiting for summer to actually hit. Everyday I look longingly at a yet-unworn pair of Oliver Peoples' sunnies lying folorn and purposeless as the sky grays over once again. What's that? Could it be? A glimmer of soleil? No, someone turned the bathroom light on over the road again. Bah! Booking tickets - gotto give those sunnies something to live for.

Fashion, it seems, is yet again over summer all too quick. It's already planning one of the holiday calendar's next events - Halloween! Gothic glamour is, of course, making its perrenial appearance, and summer's leather love continues a'pace (phew!). But at least this year it's promising to be fun too - check out Halston's glow-in-the-dark cocktail dress. That's probably the most shine we've had since, er, June?
